Carbon Black Redefines NGAV Market with Confer Acquisition

Carbon Black Acquires Confer
July 19, 2016 / Patrick Morley

Existing antivirus solutions and many emerging Next-Generation Antivirus (NGAV) products simply aren’t cutting it. The balance of power in cyber security has clearly been in attackers’ hands. According to Gartner’s 2016 Magic Quadrant for Endpoint Protection Platforms, “44% of reference customers for Endpoint Protection Platform solutions have been successfully compromised.” That’s not acceptable. It’s time to redefine what “secure” means in an NGAV solution.

I am excited to announce that Carbon Black has acquired Confer, a NGAV company based in Boston. This is a transformational moment for Carbon Black. With the acquisition of Confer, organizations of every size can now address their endpoint-security requirements through a single platform. This extension is a significant step forward in our vision to create a world safe from cyber attacks.

By adding Confer’s NGAV product (which will be named “Cb Defense”), Carbon Black is delivering the industry’s most complete next-generation endpoint security platform, designed to surpass legacy antivirus companies such as Symantec, as well as emerging endpoint solutions such as Cylance, CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks.

Confer’s product is a cloud-based NGAV solution that is lightweight, fast to deploy, and easy to manage. Companies of all sizes, including one of the world’s largest asset managers and a Fortune 50 media giant, have deployed Confer. Confer’s largest deployment to date is just under 100,000 endpoints.

There are a number of NGAV products on the market today but they are partial solutions that, in many cases, can leave your organization more vulnerable to attack. In contrast to these solutions, Carbon Black is the only platform architected to address all the requirements for an effective NGAV solution. Carbon Black combines prevention with detection and response capabilities and leverages cloud-based, behavioral-analysis techniques to help customers stop more attacks, see threats, and close the gaps.

Confer’s cloud-based analytics engine will become part of the “Cb Collective Defense Cloud,” adding significant depth to the Cb Endpoint Security Platform. The “Cb Collective Defense Cloud” provides an assessment of what’s safe and what’s not in your environment based on the most complete endpoint data. This cloud-based engine crunches big data related to attacks, threats, behaviors, and change, with the single purpose of identifying malicious activity.

The end result of this acquisition is a complete endpoint-security platform – the Cb Endpoint Security Platform – which can replace antivirus, lock down critical systems, and arm incident-response teams with the most advanced tools to proactively hunt down threats.
