Carbon Black Named a Visionary in Gartner’s 2018 Magic Quadrant for Endpoint Protection Platforms

January 25, 2018 / Michael Viscuso

For the second consecutive year, Carbon Black has been named a “Visionary” in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Endpoint Protection Platforms.

For this year’s edition of the MQ, Gartner evaluated Cb Defense, our flagship solution built on the Cb Predictive Security Cloud ™ (PSC).

Our vision for the PSC is game changing for endpoint security, and it’s a vision that’s reflected in Gartner’s latest report.

According to the “Magic Quadrant for Endpoint Protection Platforms” by Ian McShane, Avivah Litan, Eric Ouellet, and Prateek Bhajanka, January 24, 2017: “The most visionary and leading of vendors in 2018 and 2019 will be those that use the data collected from their EDR capabilities to deliver actionable guidance and advice that is tailored to their clients. Detecting known IOCs and suspicious behavior is only one side of the EPP coin — solutions must detect and proactively alert on weaknesses or vulnerabilities that are being exploited right now, or are likely to be exploited in the future.”

That is precisely what we are doing with the Cb Predictive Security Cloud…and more.

Cb Predictive Security Cloud (PSC)

With the Cb Predictive Security Cloud, Carbon Black is offering customers a converged endpoint protection platform delivering next-generation security and IT operations services through the cloud.

The PSC collects and analyzes unfiltered endpoint data to make predictions about, and protect against, future, and unknown attacks. With this insight, customers can identify attacks that other endpoint security products miss, and gain visibility into attacks that evolve over time.

The PSC also empowers security teams to uncover threats, patterns, and indicators invisible to other approaches, looking upstream to the root cause of attacks to better predict future ones. The PSC also allows seamless unification with the rest of the security stack to create new workflows and extend the value of the platform.

Services Built on the Backbone of the PSC

Our investment in the PSC also means we have the ability to roll out products and services faster and more efficiently than ever before. Since the conclusion of Gartner’s MQ evaluation, Carbon Black has released two new services on the PSC platform, demonstrating the power and extensibility of Carbon Black’s cloud-based EPP solution:

  • Cb Defense for VMware: Next-gen AV + EDR optimized to secure the Software Defined Data Center (SDDC)

  • Cb ThreatSight: which leverages the PSC to provide customers with a managed threat hunting service, staffed by a dedicated team of seasoned threat experts who keep watch over your organization’s environment, alert your team to emerging threats, and provide access to critical security services when you need them most.

We believe Gartner’s recognition of Carbon Black as a Visionary is further validation that our investment in the Cb Predictive Security Cloud aligns with the future of endpoint security. In also means the market recognizes our ability to leverage the cloud and big data analytics to collect and analyze unfiltered endpoint data. In this respect, Carbon Black is one of the leaders providing security solutions that stay ahead of today’s threats.

In its report, Gartner highlights several additional strengths for Cb Defense in the report. Click here to download the report.

In addition to Gartner’s evaluation we’d add a few important items including:

  • Cloud-driven, big-data analysis, which informs teams on what threats to prioritize

  • Powerful operational tools – such as Live Response – that give teams the power to remediate in real time

  • The ability to easily add new capabilities from the cloud without deploying additional tools

  • Cb Defense’s high performance in public testing, including:

A 99.79% efficacy (with zero false positives) against threats collected as part of ICSA Labs’ November 2017 test set.

A perfect score during an evaluation against a comprehensive set of ransomware samples based on a test from MRG Effitas.

A SANS review of Cb Defense, testing for activity logging/blocking, malware detection and removal, and non-malware attacks.

A decisive product review from Sylint, which praised Cb Defense’s efficacy against modern threats.

A 5-star overall rating from an SC Media independent test

Recognition from Ovum as a key technology to replace legacy AV

Certification to replace AV and meet anti-malware compliance requirements from Coalfire

The Future of Endpoint Security is in the Cloud

By analyzing threat trends from millions of protected endpoints and comparing them against an organization’s specific environment, Cb Defense on the Predictive Security Cloud offers customers comprehensive visibility into the attack landscape.

Along with that visibility, users also have access to real-time operational tools embedded in the cloud-based console so they don’t have to rely on other teams or tools to perform remediation actions. Finally, by providing a converged set of security services through a single lightweight sensor and cloud-based dashboard, our solution makes it easy to add new capabilities over time without deploying additional tools.

This is going to be an exciting year for Carbon Black. We will continue to innovate in the core architecture of the Cb Predictive Security Cloud and within Cb Defense, Cb Response, and Cb Protection. Customers will continue to see new capabilities introduced throughout the year.

It’s clear the bad guys are never going to stop. As a leading Visionary in the market, Carbon Black will continue its work to create a world safe from cyberattacks.
