Once a year, the cybersecurity community gathers to discuss the latest advancements and commiserate as to how we can shift the tide of the global cyber insurgency. It was recently noted that the cyber crime economy is roughly 10 times larger than the cybersecurity industry. Wow. That’s a large delta. The irony is thick.

The one true way to get perspective on the current state of the cybersecurity industry is to attend RSAC. This was my 15th year attending and while I caught the proverbial “RSAC cold” (and my feet still hurt), it was well worth attending.

I learned a handful of things attending this year’s conference:

  1. The U.S. government is consistently battling nation-state attacks. This necessitates greater information sharing and collaboration within the cybersecurity industry and among key players in the public and private sectors.

  2. Microsoft developed a seminal partnership with the cybersecurity industry named the “Tech Accord,” which calls for a “Digital Geneva Accord” to protect customers and users from cyberattacks. It subsequently calls for greater partnerships within the industry as a whole. The top line message? Corporate responsibility efforts must include cybersecurity. Carbon Black has joined this accord and looks forward to contributing to a dialogue that moves the needle.

  3. “Predictive” was a big talking point on the floor, and it appeared Carbon Black’s “Predictive Security Cloud” was as well. Each time I walked by the Carbon Black booth, there were dozens of people either attending one of our main-stage demos or lined up to connect one-on-one with a Cb engineer.

The greatest benefit of RSAC (aside from some inspired presentations) is the level of networking that occurs. Our industry empowers itself by strengthening interpersonal relationships and RSAC is the Mecca for that.  (Yes, the show floor is sensory overload and headphones become fundamental to survival, but fostering relationships helps create an important dialogue that transcends any one conference.)

Above all, I learned that the winners in cybersecurity will be defined by integration strategy, predictive analytics, and team dynamics.

I hope in 2019 the industry can discuss our collective victories and align on a proper strategy to civilize the dark web. Until then, remember: what we do in life echoes in eternity. See you next year!
