Ransomware Revealed: Robbed with a Wooden Gun
Brian Baskin & Swee Lai, Carbon Black Threat Analysis Unit
A highlight of research into ransomware samples that many not be as scary as initially thought. Either as fake malware, proof of concepts, or just badly written malware, they’re more bark than bite.
Brian Baskin is a Threat Researcher with Carbon Black’s Threat Analysis Unit with a specialty in digital forensics, incident response, and malware analysis. Brian was previously an intrusions analyst for the US Defense Cyber Crime Center. For 15 years he has researched responses to cyber threats. He has authored multiple security books and develops software for more efficient malware analysis.
Swee Lai is a Malware Analyst in the Carbon Black Threat Analysis Unit. She is responsible for research to translate evolving attacker endpoint behavior into tactical defenses. She previously worked as a malware analyst at F-Secure and as a SOC analyst in the banking industry.

Endpoint Security and the Cloud: How to Apply Predictive Analytics and Big Data
Brian Gladstein, Security Market Strategist, Carbon Black
Today’s endpoint security products focus too much on threats that have already been discovered—identifying malware variants and patching known vulnerabilities. Yet the adversary is constantly inventing new attack methods that are just different enough to go undetected. This session will discuss how predictive analytics and Big Data can do a better job discovering unknown threats.
Brian Gladstein is a Security Market Strategist and Senior Director of Product Marketing focusing on Carbon Black’s Predictive Security Cloud platform. Gladstein has extensive experience in enterprise security and software, especially in industries undergoing massive change. This is the case today in the endpoint security market, where Gladstein brings a unique mix of skills across security, software development, new product introduction, and go-to-market strategy to understand what security teams need in a cloud-based security platform, and to help Carbon Black deliver that. Gladstein holds a BS in computer science from MIT, and an MBA from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.
Carbon Black will not be hosting any special events or receptions at RSA 2018 - as of this time. We encourage you to stop by our booth (#3725) to meet with our team and also to attend the events being hosted by our partners.
